Take a step back in time, before this was a premier Camden Inn…
In 1806, lumber merchant Simon Hunt moved to Camden, Maine. In 1810, Hunt built a Federal-style home in the heart of the town.
In 1936, Captain Frank Swift – the Inn’s namesake – established Maine’s first passenger schooner fleet while living in this white clapboard village landmark inn.
While the house has been expanded over the years, the original house still retains its wonderful wide plank pine floors, chair rails, exposed beams, intricate moldings, and five fireplaces, including one with a beehive oven.
Our Camden inn today…
Owners and innkeepers Norm and Linda Henthorn strive to maintain the Captain Swift Inn’s historic feel. Both Baltimore, Maryland natives, Norm and Linda spent their lives growing up on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. They developed of a love of boating and fresh seafood, which guided their travels to New England.
After years of vacationing in New England, dreaming of establishing a bed and breakfast, Norm and Linda found Camden, Maine… and the Captain Swift Inn. They fell in love with Camden’s understated charm, breathtaking vistas, and the welcoming locals. And they’re sure you’ll love it, and their Camden inn, too.
While away your days where the “mountains meet the sea”…
Each morning you start your day with a full multicourse breakfast. The menu changes daily, but the first and second courses always feature inn specialties. For your first course, you might enjoy roasted pears, fresh fruit parfaits, or grilled pineapple with ginger cream.
The second course contains guest favorites such as sausage and brie puff, potato and basil frittatas, pecan-crusted French toast, and Maine blueberry pancakes. We get many of our ingredients from local merchants and farmers’ markets. Don’t forget there are always great home made refreshments in the afternoon.
We can accommodate special dietary needs with 24-hour notice.
Things to do near our Camden inn…
Once you’ve enjoyed your complimentary breakfast, there’s no shortage of activities to fill your day… Spend the afternoon sailing on a schooner… Take a drive up Mount Battie where you’ll see the best views of Camden… Enjoy year-round recreation at the Camden Snow Bowl… Or take a stroll around the historic downtown area of Camden where you’ll find art galleries featuring local artists, the Camden Opera House, and the freshest lobster you’ve ever had.

The best time to visit…
Camden is beautiful year-round and the Captain Swift is open for guests throughout the year.
We can’t boast enough about our summers in Maine. The days are warm, but not often hot, and nights are cool. The weather is perfect for hiking, sailing, or simply taking a drive along Maine’s Midcoast region.
In the autumn, enjoy stunning views of the changing foliage. Our mountainous coast affords visitors views they won’t find anywhere else.
In the winter, a restorative peacefulness settles over the village. And once the snow falls, the town resembles a Thomas Kinkade painting. The Camden Snow Bowl offers skiing and hosts the U.S. National Toboggan Championships.
In the spring, our gardens announce the arrival of the season with the blossoming of flowers. And farmers’ markets begin to flow with locally-grown produce.
No matter the season, the Captain Swift Inn is perfect for a special or romantic getaway.
Your innkeepers, Norm and Linda welcome you into their home and look forward to having you stay with them.
